A Portrait can be in the form of painting, photograph and sculpture that highlights the face and their expression. The idea is to capture the personality, likeness and mood of the subject. Most portrait paintings illustrate a person facing directly to the artist for a successful and better connection with the viewer. Portrait paintings were practised since the early times.

There several famous practitioner of portrait paintings during the renaissance period such as Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci. The most famous masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, was painted by the world-renowned Italian inventor and painter, Leonardo da Vinci. There were several notable portrait artists during the barque period such as Sir Anthony van Dyck and Rembrandt.

- Group portraits: formal & informal – One form of portrait painting that involves a group of people such as family portrait, a group of militia or friends. As to the classification of formal and informal will depend on how the subject was dressed, the setting and poses. Formal portraits are usually used in painting of royal families where poses and setting should suitable for a king and ruler of nation.
- Individual Portraits – Individual portraits are common practice among artists and painters. It involves a single subject in which the painter tries to capture the mood and likeness of the subject at that moment.
- Wedding/Betrothal Portraits – A form of portrait painting where it captures a wedding or engagement and the nature of their relationship.
- Self-portraits - One form of portrait is the self-portrait where the painter creates a portrait painting of himself. Self-portraits are practiced way back in the ancient times in Egypt where the several sculptors carved sculptures of themselves.
