The Middle Ages Arts (commonly known as Medieval Arts) covers from a large period of time spanning to 1000 years and reaching places such as Europe, Middle East and Africa. This period has been divided by historians into 8 different large movements that include:

Many of the precious paintings during the middle ages have not survived through the years. However, there are some pieces that are recovered and stored for the future generations to wonder at.
There are also several noted painters and artists in this period such as:

?    Domenico di Michelino – An Italian (1417-1491) from Florence was a painter in the Middle Ages from the Florentine School and follower of Fra Angelico. He usually painted scenes from the Holy Bible and most of his artworks can be found on the Florence’s church of Santa Maria del Fiore that includes Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy) and the La commedia illumina Firenze (“The Comedy Illuminating Florence”), showing Dante Alighieri. The name Michelino was taken from his teacher’s name who was a bone and ivory carver. His accomplishments include being elected to the painter’s guild (Compagnia di San Luca) in 1442 and in 1444, joined the Arte dei Medici e degli Speziali. He died in Florence, Italy in the year 1441.

?    Giotto di Bondone – Popularly known as Giotto, was an Italian painter who was born in 1267 near Florence, Italy. He is known for his fresco and painting artworks. One of Giotto’s works is the decoration at the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, which was completed around 1305. The chapel is commonly known as Arena Chapel. The fresco portrayed the life of Christ and the virgin and one of the great masterpieces in this period.

He had two great mentors and masters, Cimabue and Duccio. Cimabue was one of the renowned painters in Tuscany while Duccio who was working in Siena. Giotto accompanied Cimabue to Rome and Assisi to paint frescoes at Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. By 1287, Giotto married Ricevuta di Lapo del Pela in which they had several children and one of his children, Francesco, also became a painter. He died in 1337 and according to Vasari, he was buried in the cathedral of Florence, Santa Maria del Fiore.

Konrad Witz (1400-1416) – A German painter who was actively based in Basel, Switzerland. He became famous when he painted three altarpieces, which had survived to this day. One of his earliest altarpieces was in 1435, Heilspiegel Altarpiece. Most of the pieces today can be found in Kunstmuseum in Basel. His next work was the Altarpiece of the Virgin in 1440 while his last altarpieces was in 1444, St. Peter Altarpiece. His last altarpiece contained most of his renowned composition, which was the Miraculous Draught of Fishes.

?    Simone Martini (1284 – 1344) – An Italian painter who was born in Siena and one of the chief figures behind the early Italian paintings. He had also influenced the development of the International Gothic Style. He was the brother in law of the artist Lippo Memmi. It was known that he was a student of the great sienese painter, Duccio di Buoninsegna.

Among his early work was in 1315, the Maestà, found on the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena.

?    Toros Roslin (1210-1288) — An Armenian painter and one of the well-known masters in the Armenian illuminated manuscript during the Middle Ages. He was reportedly working in Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Byzantine had influenced his works and Italian styles suggesting that he had been travelling to foreign lands in his early years. Among his works includeed a portrait of Leo III of Armenia and some works for Prince Vasak. He was also known for several religious works that included themes such as The Nativity of Jesus and the Crucifixion of Christ.
