Landscape

Landscape, from the Dutch word “landschap”, meant a piece of cultivated land which makes Landscape painting, a form of painting portraying beautiful sceneries such as valleys, mountains, trees, forests and rivers and that the skies most of time are included in the scenery as well. Landscape paintings have been common during the Roman times where beautiful sceneries were painted on the rooms as can be seen on their frescoes preserved up until this day. Landscape painting was considered a field of expertise during the 15th century Europe.

These are often practised and expressed in religious themes such as the “Journey of the Magi”.
In the modern times, art schools were dedicated to landscape painting and one these schools was the Hudson River Schools where painters create gigantic and scenic work of arts to capture the beauty of the landscapes that had given them inspiration. Landscape painting was also useful in documenting and mapping newly discovered lands in the early 20th century. One of these examples is the exploration of Canada where a group of explorers, mariners, naturalists and settlers tried to paint the Canadian scenery to document and mapped out what they have seen in the new land. The most famous of these paintings are the “Group of Seven” artworks.
There are other types of “scapes” other than landscapes such as:

  • Aerial Landscapes – Term use to paintings that portrays view from above looking down to the subject.
  • Inscapes – Term used to abstract or surrealist paintings that portrays the psychoanalytic view of the mind
  • Hardscapes – Term used to paintings that portray hard or cemented areas such as industrial zones, housing development areas and multiple business buildings.
  • Cityscapes – Term used to paintings that portray a city, town or urbanized areas.
  • Riverscapes – Term used to paintings that portrays rivers, bay, inlets and creeks.
  • Vedute – Term used for coloured landscapes, which are usually cityscapes that are common during the 18th century paintings.
  • Skyscapes – Terms used for paintings that portrays atmospheric conditions such as the weather and clouds
  • Seascapes – Term used to paintings that portrays ocean, seas and beaches.
  • Moonscapes – Paintings that portray moon landscapes.
