Abstract Painting

Abstract painting usually utilizes form and colour in a non-figurative way and do not portray any entity or object in the natural world. It is usually used to describe cubist and futurist art earlier in the 20th century, which portray realistic forms in a simplified manner, leaving only a reference of the original subject. Most of these paintings asserted that it only captured the inherent qualities of the portrayed objects than its external appearance.

To avoid any uncertainty, the terms “non-objective”, “non-representational” and “non-figurative” art are more accurate terms to use. The term abstract painting and abstract art were invented early in the 20th century to express a cultural phenomenon that had swept the entire western culture. There was no clear indication on who was the first modern abstract artist or painter but there are some candidates that could have started the revolution such as:

  • Wassily Kandinsky from Russia
  • Piet Mondrian of the Netherlands
  • Robert Delaunay from Paris, France
  • František Kupka from Czechoslovakia
  • Arthur Dove from the United States of America

It was thought that abstract painting was more of a cultural phenomenon rather than an invention of a single brilliant artist.
The idea of non-figurative or non-objective art was not invented in the 20th century as everyone has thought. People have been doing non-figurative art since man has learned to draw. It was believed that the Islam Religion forbids portrayal of people and had developed Calligraphy, which was considered as a higher standard in decorative artistry and one form of non-figurative art.
Here are some sample paintings of abstract art: [All are courtesy from Wikipedia.

  • Wassily Kandinsky
  • Barnett Newman
  • Jackson Pollock
  • Piet Mondrian

Abstract painting is not as easy as it looks. The famous and renowned Russian abstract painter Wassily Kadinsky has said it best:

“Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colours, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential.”
